Driveway Transformation with Recycled Millings: A Cost-Effective Upgrade
At Auburn Sky Landscaping, we recently had the pleasure of transforming a driveway for a longtime client. The project involved expanding the driveway, improving its functionality, and giving it a refreshed look using recycled asphalt millings—a budget-friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional paving. Here’s how we tackled the job and why millings might be the perfect solution for your property.
The Challenge: Expanding Space and Solving Drainage Issues
Our clients needed more driveway space to accommodate their RV, trucks, and other vehicles. Additionally, the area required proper grading to ensure water would drain away from the house. To achieve this, we decided to:
Expand the driveway by cutting back the existing bank.
Reuse the excavated soil to fill a large sinkhole in the backyard.
This project was especially rewarding because it was a return visit—we had originally installed millings for this driveway about seven years ago. The results back then were excellent, so it made sense to use the same material for the upgrade.
Why Recycled Millings?
Recycled asphalt millings offer many benefits, making them an excellent choice for driveways:
Cost-Effective: Millings are significantly cheaper than traditional asphalt or chip-and-oil paving.
Low Maintenance: Unlike asphalt, millings don’t require frequent sealing or repairs.
Sustainable: Made from recycled road material, millings are environmentally friendly and contribute to reducing waste.
Durable: Once compacted and baked in summer heat, millings lock up tightly and can even withstand snowplowing.
For this project, we used refined millings, which are processed into finer pieces, ensuring a smoother, more polished finish that closely resembles blacktop.
The Process: From Planning to Completion
Here’s how we completed the transformation:
Preparation and Excavation
We cut back the bank, removing approximately 35-40 yards of soil. This widened the driveway to accommodate the RV and other vehicles while creating a clear pathway for easy parking.Repurposing Excess Soil
Instead of discarding the excavated material, we used it to fill a large sinkhole in the backyard. This approach saved time, reduced waste, and solved another issue on the property.Installing Recycled Millings
Nearly 50 tons of refined millings were spread across the driveway. The summer heat played a crucial role, helping the millings settle and lock into place. We used a roller to compact the surface for a durable finish.Grading for Proper Drainage
We ensured the driveway had the perfect pitch, directing water away from the house and into a designated discharge area. This prevents potential water damage to the home’s foundation.Finishing Touches
After compacting the millings, we cleaned up the site and added seed and straw along the edges for a polished look.
The Results
The newly expanded driveway now provides ample space for the RV, truck, and other vehicles. It boasts a sleek, gray-black finish that looks almost like asphalt but without the high cost and maintenance. With proper grading and durable materials, the clients can enjoy a functional and long-lasting driveway for years to come.
Why Choose Recycled Millings for Your Driveway?
If you’re considering a new driveway or an upgrade, recycled millings offer numerous benefits:
Affordability compared to traditional paving.
Durability, especially during summer when the heat enhances the material’s stability.
Environmental sustainability by reusing road materials.
Plus, refined millings provide a polished look while keeping the overall cost low, making it an ideal choice for those who want practicality without sacrificing aesthetics.
