Nourish your Lawn with Core Aeration + Overseeding

So that your lawn becomes — and stays — the beautiful green carpet you’ve been hoping for, it’s important that you employ key landscape practices: a regular mowing schedule, a healthy Lawn Application Program, and a well-timed and -designed irrigation or watering system, to name a few. Many people don’t realize, however, that in addition to grooming, eating, and drinking, your lawn needs to breathe.

Core aeration allow air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch. Then, vital nutrients can reach the soil beneath your grass, ensuring a thick, lush carpet of green.

So how does core aeration work?

Using an aerating machine, an Auburn Sky maintenance technician will perforate your lawn with small holes. This action will serve three purposes: breaking up compacted soil, breaking through thatched lawn, and opening up pathways for nutrients to travel down into the grass roots. Our tech will then remove the debris (thatching and soil plugs) and overseed the lawn with professional grade seed mix particular to your lawn’s needs. Now, your lawn is free to breathe and receive nutrients and those new seeds can take root.

We recommend core aeration as a yearly practice (many of our clients include it in their Full Maintenance Program). If you’re wondering if you should incorporate core aeration into the love and attention you give your lawn, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does your lawn see a lot of action with kids and pets running around?

  • Was your lawn installed when they were finishing up the construction of your new home?

  • Does your lawn feel spongy or seem to dry out easily?

  • Was your lawn established by way of sod?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you’re going to want the team at Auburn Sky to come out and aerate your lawn. Here’s why:

  • A lot of action or heavy foot traffic from kids and pets contributes to soil compaction.

  • The topsoil of newly constructed lawns is often buried during hte process of buildling your home. That means that grass is often started on subsoil that’s been compacted by construction traffic and stripped of nutrients.

  • A spongy lawn often means there’s excessive thatch. So, while the natural layer of thatch that forms throughout the turf’s growing process and lies on top of the soil beneath the visible grass is completely okay, an excessive amount of thatch will become a tight barrier between nutrients and the grasses’ root system.

  • When sod is installed, the fine layer of soil that comes with that patch of sod is laid on top of the existing coarser soil of your lawn. This layering can cause a disruption in drainage as water will get trapped in that finer soil of the sod patch. This then leads to compaction and poor root development. Aerating can break up the layering and allow water to flow through the soil, carrying hydration and nutrients to the roots.
